Leather Sofa Care: Tips for Real and Faux Leather

Leather Sofa Care: Tips for Real and Faux Leather

A leather sofa is an investment that can last decades with proper care. But leather is not all the same — and the wrong care can cause expensive damage. In this guide, we explain the difference between real leather and faux leather and show you how to care for both properly.

Real Leather vs. Faux Leather: The Differences

Real Leather (Smooth leather, Aniline, Semi-aniline)

  • Natural material that breathes
  • Develops a beautiful patina over time
  • More sensitive to moisture and chemicals
  • Higher maintenance effort, but longer lasting

Faux Leather (PU leather, PVC leather)

  • Easier to maintain than real leather
  • No drying out or cracking
  • Can wear faster with heat and direct sunlight
  • More affordable, but shorter lifespan

Care Routine for Real Leather

Weekly:

  • Dust with a soft, dry cloth
  • Carefully remove crumbs and dirt from crevices
  • Don't vacuum directly on the leather (scratches!)

Monthly:

  • Wipe with a slightly damp microfibre cloth
  • Immediately dry with a clean cloth
  • Never use household remedies like vinegar or washing-up liquid

Every 3-4 Months:

  • Apply specialist leather conditioner
  • Work in thinly and evenly
  • Leave to absorb overnight

Common Mistakes with Real Leather:

  • Cleaning too wet — water leaves marks
  • All-purpose cleaners — destroy the surface
  • Direct sunlight — dries out the leather
  • Damp clothing — denim can transfer dye

Care Routine for Faux Leather

Faux leather is much easier to maintain, but has its own weaknesses.

Regular Care:

  • Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap solution
  • Remove stains quickly before they dry
  • Allow to dry thoroughly

Avoid:

  • Harsh cleaning products — attack the coating
  • Abrasive materials — scratch the surface
  • Proximity to radiators — faux leather becomes brittle

When to Call a Professional

Some situations require professional leather cleaning:

  • Deep stains that have soaked into the leather
  • Cracks and scuffs on real leather
  • Discolouration from sun or dye transfer
